What are the free ways to collect wedding photos from guests?
Answer·Last updated: ·By Ali Mert Güleç
Short answer
The common free options are a WhatsApp group, a Google Photos shared album and a shared Google Drive folder. They are enough for small weddings where everyone knows each other. At larger weddings, guest sign-ups, compressed photos and everyone scrolling hundreds of photos to find themselves become the problem; that is where a QR code and face recognition help.
Free options
| Method | Good at | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp group | Everyone has it, no setup | Members see each other's phone numbers; photos are compressed by default (HD must be chosen manually) |
| Google Photos shared album | Shared by link, free | Saved photos count against Google storage; guests have to find the link and add to the album |
| Google Drive folder | Original files kept | Free quota is up to 15 GB shared with Gmail (since March 2026 new accounts get 5 GB until a phone number is verified); folder order is left to guests |

When free isn't enough
- Big weddings: putting 200 guests in one WhatsApp group is both a privacy and an organisation problem.
- Finding yourself: at a real wedding there was a median of 6 faces per photo, 1,603 faces in 220 photos. Every guest would have to scan them one by one.
- Photographer shots: professional photos usually arrive days later through a separate link and never sit next to guest photos.
When Photonza makes sense
When guests should join without an account, everyone should find their own photos with a selfie, and photographer and guest photos should live in one place. Guests never pay; the event owner buys a package sized by the number of photos (packages).
Frequently asked questions
Does Photonza have a free version?
It is always free for guests. Event owners can open an account for free; creating an event requires a package. Contact us for prices.
Why does WhatsApp reduce photo quality?
WhatsApp compresses photos. Choosing HD compresses them less but still doesn't keep the original quality, and most guests don't choose it.
