How Big Is a Wedding Video File?

Türkçe okuBy Ali Mert Güleç5 min read

A wedding video's size depends less on its length than on its bitrate (how many megabits are recorded per second). For Full HD (1080p) at a typical 10–25 Mbps, a 2-hour wedding video is 9–22.5 GB and a 3-hour one 13.5–34 GB. In 4K those numbers easily pass 45 GB for 2 hours and 67 GB for 3. Below: how to calculate it, what we measured on a real phone recording, and how to send and store a file that big.

The calculation: one formula

Size (GB) = bitrate (Mbps) × duration (seconds) ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000

We divide by 8 because of bits versus bytes: 8 bits make a byte. For example, a 2-hour (7,200-second) video recorded at 16 Mbps: 16 × 7,200 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 = 14.4 GB.

Calculated with the formula above; audio adds a few hundred MB. To find your video's bitrate, check the file's "Get Info/Properties" window or a video player's "Codec information" screen.

A real measurement: how big is what a phone records?

To see how the table matches reality, we measured a 52.6-second screen recording made on an iPhone:

Original (iPhone, HEVC)Compressed (H.264, 1080p)
Resolution1320 × 2868884 × 1920
File size116.3 MB7.2 MB
Bitrate17.7 Mbps1.1 Mbps
Per minute132.7 MB8.2 MB

Measured with ffprobe, 26 September 2026. Compression: ffmpeg, libx264, CRF 26.

This phone's own recording takes about 133 MB per minute; at that rate a 2-hour recording is 15.9 GB and a 3-hour one 23.9 GB, in line with the 16–25 Mbps rows of the table.

The compressed version is 93.8% smaller. To be honest: most of a screen recording is static, and static images compress very well. Constantly moving wedding footage (the dance floor, lighting effects, crowds) can't be shrunk that much without visible quality loss; a realistic target is a third to a half of the original.

How to send a wedding video

  • WhatsApp: Files sent as video are heavily compressed. Sending as a "document" avoids compression, but there is a 2 GB limit per file. A 2-hour wedding video is far above it.
  • Cloud link: Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive or Dropbox are the most practical for large files. Free tiers usually aren't enough for a single 4K wedding video; pick a place the recipient can download from too.
  • File-transfer services: Good for one-off large transfers, but links usually expire after a few days; tell the recipient to download right away.
  • USB stick or external drive: The oldest option and still the most reliable, ideal for the copy you give to family.

Short guest videos are different: they're usually 10 seconds to 2 minutes and small separate files. On Photonza guests can upload videos of up to 50 MB each, about 20–25 seconds of a phone's own recording. Trimming longer clips with the phone's editor, or recording at a lower resolution, is enough.

How to store a wedding video

Searches for "wedding video lost" come up often, so we added this section. Preventing loss is simple but takes discipline:

  1. Three copies, two different media, one copy outside the house. For example: one on the computer, one on an external drive, one in the cloud.
  2. Copy it the day you receive it. The photographer's link or USB stick shouldn't be the only copy.
  3. Put retention in the contract. Ask up front how long the photographer keeps the raw footage and edited video after delivery.
  4. Open it once a year. Drives and sticks can fail over time; don't count it as "backed up" until you've seen it play.
  5. Convert old formats. Move videos still on DVD to digital files today.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is a 2-hour wedding video? In Full HD, 9–22.5 GB depending on bitrate; in 4K, 45 GB or more. With the phone recording we measured, 15.9 GB.

How many GB is a 3-hour wedding video? In Full HD, 13.5–34 GB; in 4K, 67.5 GB or more. With our measurement, 23.9 GB.

What format should a wedding video be delivered in? H.264 (MP4) is the most compatible and opens on almost every device. HEVC (H.265) gives smaller files at the same quality, but some older computers and TVs can't play it. Asking for both is safest.

How do I watch a wedding video on TV? Copying the MP4 to a USB stick and plugging it into the TV's USB port works on most smart TVs. If the file is larger than 4 GB, the stick must be formatted exFAT, not FAT32; FAT32 can't hold a single file over 4 GB.
